Isandlwana Lodge, Zululand (kwaZulu-Natal), South Africa
The Lodge is set in spectacular surroundings with magnificent views and has numerous activities to offer.
There is an eminent resident historian and guided tours are available to neighbouring Zulu War and Boer
War battlefields.
Isandlwana Mountain (framed under the canopy) is the scene of the Battle of Isandlwana (depicted in the film “Zulu Dawn” starring Burt Lancaster and Peter O’Toole) in which a British and Colonial force was annihilated by a Zulu impi of 25,000 warriors.
The dead were buried where they fell and the graves are marked today by cairns of whitewashed stones. The inscription on the Memorial to the Natal Carbineers reads poignantly “....not theirs to save the day but where they stood, falling, to dye the earth with brave men's blood for England’s sake and duty...."
I have stayed at the Lodge four times and on each occasion have thoroughly enjoyed excellent food
(and drink!) and very warm hospitality. Contact details are:
