Illustration of Hand Appliqué Detail from “Judy’s Wish” Quilt
All art work is done on paper beforehand and designs can be suitably drafted in order for them to be worked in fabric. The order of application is recorded before work starts.
The designs can be worked comfortably in small units, singularly or in groups according to what works best for the design.
The technique avoids the need to struggle with a large quilt background.
Work can be prepared in advance and set aside to be worked when you sit of an evening, go away on holiday or set off on a journey etc.
More complicated designs can be attempted in the comforting knowledge that if they do not work out then they can be discarded and another attempt made without your quilt being spoiled.
Appliqué can be applied with ease to a complicated pieced background.
Designs can be moved around to alternative positions maybe than those you first decide on.
More designs can be added if those you already have are not sufficient and alternatively can be discarded if there are too many.
There is no necessity to mark the front of the quilt and therefore there are no drawn lines to cover.
